Early life
(1994 to 2000)
There were not many special things that happened to her in the early days. She was born in Hanoi, Vietnam. Then one day, her oldest brother won a scholarship to America. They all decided that it would be better if they could move there with her brother as well. Since English was not her major, she found it impossible to understand any of the lessons at school and struggled to adjust to her new life. She also experienced frequent homesickness.
(2000 to 2010)
The newborn brother's arrival brought unexpected purpose to Veronica's days. As her parents juggled work and childcare, she found herself drawn into his world, rocking him when he fussed, entertaining him during stolen moments between homework and chores. What might have been loneliness instead became devotion. Veronica had always been a happy child, but meeting Cal changed her in subtle ways. She would drag him everywhere: to the park, where she pushed him on the swings until he shrieked with laughter; to family picnics, where she sneaked him extra watermelon when their parents weren’t looking. Learning that Cal was half-Asian thrilled her; it was rare to see anyone like him here. Since he was the only person who never passed judgment on her, Veronica had such a wonderful time hanging out with him!
She attended more parties in her teens, usually to get wasted and return home late. Although her parents disapproved of such activity, they were unable to stop it because it had no bearing on her academic performance. Honours classes, top marks—what did it matter if the girls in the hallways whispered “weird” when she passed, their eyes flicking over her thrift-store clothes and unapologetic laugh? With bright colour shirts with different types of patterns and mismatched accessories that celebrated her individuality, but beneath the vibrant exterior, she still felt the weight of being an outsider. She loved to spend more time with the lovely girls she met at the rave, but that was as far as it went. They weren’t really her close friend. Yet, despite her attempts to “fit in”, she cherished every moment of her time with the group of friends she had.
